Some days feel like a warm hug from the sun… others feel like you’re stuck inside a toaster. Whether it’s the height of summer or just a particularly “hot under the collar” kind of day, staying cool and calm is about more than just temperature — it’s about how we care for ourselves, inside and out.
1. Cool the Body
Our bodies work hard to keep us at the right temperature. Help them along by:
- Sipping, not gulping your drinks — cool water, herbal teas, or fruit-infused water keep you refreshed without shocking your system.
- Choosing light, loose clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen to let your skin breathe.
- Seeking shade or creating your own — a wide-brimmed hat or a pretty parasol is both practical and stylish.
2. Calm the Mind
Heat (literal or emotional) can make tempers fray and thoughts race. Try:
- Breathing exercises like the “cooling breath” (Sitali Pranayama), where you curl your tongue into a tube, breathe in slowly through it, and exhale through your nose.
- Mindful moments — pause, close your eyes, and notice the sounds around you without judgement.
- Gentle stretches in a shaded spot to release tension and reset your mood.
3. Care for the Soul
Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential, especially when life feels busy or overwhelming.
- Protect your boundaries: it’s okay to say “no” when you need rest.
- Indulge in small rituals: a cool evening shower, your favourite calming scent in a diffuser, or five minutes barefoot on the grass.
- Stay connected: sometimes the quickest way to soothe a frazzled spirit is a chat with a friend who just gets it.
Remember
You can’t pour from an empty cup (or a melted ice lolly). Prioritising your own comfort and calm means you’re more present, patient, and joyful for the people and moments that matter most.
So next time the day feels too hot, too hectic, or just too much — take a breath, find your shade, and give yourself permission to cool down, inside and out.
